French authorities will start intercepting migrant vessels in English Channel following British demands
France has agreed to start intercepting small boats in the Channel, following an extended period of insistence from the United Kingdom.
The change in policy follows the British leader wrote to the President urging him to back the initiative and stating there currently "have no effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French security forces have been authorized to stop the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their migrants, according to authoritative confirmation.
French authorities have rarely intervened to stop the overcrowded boats departing from the coastline because it is viewed as excessively high a risk to both officers and individuals.
"It is crucial that we implement these tactics this period... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel."
Currently, a French maritime police representative says personnel will start taking action at sea, with the objective of safeguarding human life.
Significantly, the spokesperson ruled out the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had previously been reported as a potential technique to snarl the propellers of the vessels.
This determination to intervene at all is a major step forward, following a short-lived shift towards a more aggressive approach this warmer season, which ceased when the former government official left government.
That was highlighted in the summer month, preceding a summit between the Prime Minister and President, when authorities were observed walking into the sea to slash the hulls of a vessel.
Currently French authorities will again be permitted to stop boats before they pick up migrant individuals from the beaches of France's north coast, however it's uncertain how the vessels will be prevented.
Strong winds are presently postponing the start of interceptions and the people-smuggling gangs will be seeking ways to adjust to avoid interception, as they have done so often in the past.
The Home Office and Downing Street have been approached for comment.
