The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
