Cyclone the storm is projected to escalate to a uncommon Category 5 cyclone as it turns in the direction of Jamaica, delivering life-threatening rapid inundation and landslides.

The cyclone, which registered wind speeds of up to 195 km/h as of 0600 Greenwich Mean Time, is presently veering north-west in the Caribbean region and is expected to reach land by Tuesday, as reported by meteorological authorities.

Alerts of electricity outages and disruption to utilities have been released as this storm generates up to 30 inches of precipitation and coastal flooding as high as thirteen feet above ground. "Seek shelter now," inhabitants have been advised.

This hurricane is the thirteenth hurricane in the current Atlantic storm period, which normally finishes in November.

Highest-Level Storm Risk

A highest-level storm is the most powerful category, with winds of at least 157mph.

While the hurricane is projected to diminish in strength to a Category 4 hurricane before making landfall on Jamaica, authorities said there was "almost no noticeable change in the total effects" upon reaching the coast, and that the hurricane will be "just as powerful" when it hits the country.

Urgent Safety Steps

With tropical storm-strength wind and rainfall already expected long before it moves across central Jamaica - possibly even the national capital - alerts indicate that "readiness efforts must be accelerated".

"An extended timeframe of destructive gusts and heavy rainfall have begun and will cause devastating and dangerous rapid water accumulation and numerous mudslides," counseled meteorological officials.

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness said: "I know that there are countless citizens who are anxious, who are extremely apprehensive, and rightfully so: you should be concerned.

"Yet the optimal approach to manage nervousness and any apprehension and anxiety is to be prepared."

Residents are being advised to fortify their houses with protective bags and timber panels, and to gather necessary supplies.

Regional Effects

Advisories are also ongoing for areas in Haiti including the main city, Port au Prince, the Dominican Republic and Cuba's eastern region, where Melissa is anticipated to bring similar effects by the midweek period.

Landslides presently generated by the hurricane have already killed two in Haiti, according to local authorities.

Projected Path

The hurricane is predicted to pass over the island nation by midweek before traveling via the Antillas Mayores and out into the Atlantic Ocean.

By the moment it reaches the Caribbean nation, it is forecast to have weakened to a category three hurricane.

Climate Context

Although it is hard to link particular meteorological occurrences to environmental shifts, experts say it is resulting in weather phenomena more common and more intense.
